Over 15 000 wine-making families farm 90% of the area which comprises the Champagne appellation. These families create their wines with the help of more than 6 000 permanent employees and a vast number of seasonal workers (more than 50 000 during the grape-picking season alone).

The remaining 10% of the Champagne Appellation is used by approximately 100 Champagne Houses to produce their “Grandes Marques,” employing 4 000 staff who benefit from a special social status in the region

The sale of 300 million bottles of champagne every year (1/3 of which are exported outside France) supports various related local services including glass-blowing, cork making (), printing, training, packaging, agricultural machinery manufacture, transportation and tourism. These industries employ over 5 000 staff in over 100 enterprises.
All told, more than 30 000 whole families dedicate their lives to creating Champagne, with thousands of others involved in closely related industries.
